JumpstART Stories & Art Continues – JumpstART, a family-friendly program cosponsored by the Irving Public Library and the Irving Arts Center, continues at 10 a.m. Sept. 4 with the theme Fall into Reading. Each hourlong program features a new theme for story time, followed by hands-on art activities. JumpstART is offered on the first Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. Irving Idol – The Southwest Branch Library will host Irving Idol at 7 p.m. Sept. 18. at the Georgia Farrow Recreation Center, 530 Davis St. Participation in the event is open to ages 12-19. Admission is free. Gift certificates will be awarded to final contestants. Registration by Sept. 15 is required. Mustang Park Recreation Center Birthday Party – Mustang Park Recreation Center will host the six-year anniversary of its opening from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 12 with an open house that includes entertainment and refreshments.

Bioblitz Invitational – The Parks and Recreation Department, Solid Waste Services and the eco-tourism team will host the Bioblitz Invitational on Sept. 20 at Campión Trails. Bioblitz will kick off the city’s new ecotourism program. Groups representing recreation centers, home schools, youth services and scouts will explore various trails to identify and document plants, birds and other wildlife species. Participants receive T-shirts, fanny packs and other giveaway items. Professional nature specialists will lead the groups. Approximately 100 children between the ages of 10-12 have registered to participate. Lunch will be provided. In the event of rain, the program will shift to the University of Dallas campus.

Annual Ms. Mature Pageant – The 26^th Annual Ms. Mature Pageant will be held Sept. 26 at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. The award-winning program features senior ladies vying for the title of Ms. Mature Irving. Contestants compete in categories including personality, talent and evening wear. The winner will represent Irving in the state Ms. Mature Pageant, which could lead to the National Ms. Mature Pageant.

Irving Main Street Event – Irving residents are invited to attend the Irving Main Street Event from 3 to 8 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Irving Heritage District. The theme will be Music and Magic on Main, and the event will feature a car show, artists, music, magic, food and children’s activities. The schedule of events includes:

• Manifolds on Main car show, with on-site registration beginning at 1 p.m. Visit the car show

• Jazz performance by Fingerprints from 3 to 4 p.m.
• High School Caesar Band from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

In an effort to contribute the the joy of celebrating the 225th birthday of our City’s namesake – George Washington Irving, the Sherwood Forest Neightborhood Association, in collaboration with the Irving Community Theater (ICT), is hosting a trivia contest. One winner will be selected from among those with the highest score and they will receive a pair of tickets to see the current ICT production of “The Unexpected Guest” that opens tonight. The Irving Arts Center will host an Art in the Garden this Sunday, Oct. 14 from 2-4 p.m. Art in the Garden acts as a showcase for artists to sell and exhibit their works. I’d like to invite you to join us for the event. There is no fee to participate. Please just show up by 2 p.m. with a table, chairs or any other supplies you need to exhibit/sell. Art in the Garden will take place outside in the Sculpture Garden at the Irving Arts Center. It is in conjunction with our Family Funday.

One Book, One Irving: The Irving Public Library will hold its second One Book, One Irving community-wide reading project at 7 p.m. Sept. 17, which will explore “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros. The project and related events will coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15. Cisneros will speak at the Irving Arts Center, located at 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. Her appearance is made possible through the library’s partnership with the Irving Arts Center and is sponsored by the Friends of the Irving Public Library. Shredding opportunity: Residents can have their personal documents shredded by Shred Document Destruction from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 21 at Irving’s Recycling Center located at O’Connor Plaza (northwest corner of State Highway 183 and O’Connor Road). Participants are limited to two file boxes of paper documents per visit. Residents also may recycle their regular household recyclables at the center, including paper, cardboard, metal cans, glass, bottles and jars, plastic food containers (excluding No. 6, Styrofoam), cell phones, empty toner/laser cartridges, and computer equipment including monitors. Town Hall meeting: Join the City of Irving for a Town Hall meeting to discuss city projects and initiatives. The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 25 at the Irving Arts Center, Carpenter Performance Hall, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd.

The presentation will provide an update on key initiatives such as public safety, code enforcement, neighborhood improvements and corridor enhancements. Asleep at the Wheel concert and dance: Don’t miss a live concert and dance by Asleep at the Wheel on Oct. 6 at the Irving Arts Center, Carpenter Performance Hall, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. The concert kicks off the opening of the exhibition by Gary Goldberg, “Texas Singer-Songwriters: An Americana Portrait,” on display Oct. 6-Nov. 11. Hispanic Heritage Month at the Arts Center: Enjoy two culturally rich exhibitions featuring art from the 2007 Arte de America Hispana yellow pages contest, and the Serie Print Project: 1993-2006. Both exhibitions will be on display through Oct. 28 at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. Arte de America Hispana will showcase the rich and diverse Hispanic heritages found in the Metroplex, and the Serie Print Project will showcase a survey of 31 fine art serigraph prints by Latino/a artists from the Coronado Studio in Austin produced from 1993-2006. Fall Recreation Programs: A variety of new recreation programs will be offered to Irving residents this fall. For more information on any of the following activities, contact the nearest recreation center.

Recreation Camping – The REC Recreation Camping Program, provided through a partnership with Boy Scouts of America, will introduce basic camping skills and encourage Irving residents to learn about the city’s outdoor recreation amenities. The program will give families an opportunity to experience nature firsthand through a series of classes, and an indoor and outdoor camping event.

Geocaching Urban Games – Residents of all ages can participate in Geocaching Urban Games through the Parks and Recreation Department. Urban gaming is a trend that involves expanding play space, which can include entire neighborhoods, parks or other defined areas throughout Irving. The games can feature treasure hunts, scavenger hunts and a host of other challenges.

Family First Fridays – This fall, all Irving recreation centers will host Family First Fridays, where each center will reserve rooms from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. for a variety of fun family activities. Families will be required to register for each event. Program themes may dictate a specific meal or pot luck menu. A variety of activities may be offered at various locations within each recreation center. 

ICTN airtime expanded: Irving Community Television Network (ICTN) has expanded its hours on the air with a block of programming that begins at 9 a.m. on ICTN 1 (Time Warner – Channel 16 and Verizon – Channel 30, or at www.ictn.tv). The new hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. ICTN also is planning expansion of programming on all three channels through the use of automated equipment.
 

New ICTN programming: Irving Community Television Network (ICTN) has launched a new city magazine show, called “City Source,” to showcase many of the programs and initiatives being offered by the City of Irving. Courtney Mason serves as producer/director of the program. The new half-hour show airs every two weeks on ICTN 1 (Time Warner – Channel 16 and Verizon – Channel 30, or at www.ictn.tv).
