Chemical Collection; Free Item Exchange

Home Chemical Collection Day

The City of Irving will host a Home Chemical Collection Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 10 at Irving Mall, on the northwest corner behind Dillard’s. Acceptable items include pool and yard chemicals, craft/hobby supplies, batteries, automotive fluids, oil filters, paint and home repair products, household cleaners and fluorescent light bulbs. Unacceptable items include tires, business or medical wastes, containers larger than 5 gallons, explosives, common recyclables, and smoke detectors or other radioactive materials. The free event is for Irving residents, but a current driver’s license and utility bill must be provided. For more information, call Solid Waste Services at (972) 721-8059.

Material Exchange Program

A free online program that matches residents who have good household items to dispose of with local individuals who can use them is now available. Items are not for sale, but are listed for exchange only. Irving’s Material Exchange works to help reduce the number of reusable items placed in the landfill and to expand the city’s recycling program. Visit www.cityofirving.org/solid-waste-services and click on “Irving’s Material Exchange Program” listed at the left.

I’ve talked to friends in other parts of the country who use a program similar to this and have heard nothing but good things about the way it works. I’m so glad to see that we have it now and I won’t be putting things out on the curb and hoping someone takes it before the trash collection.
